CHHS Senior Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist

Croton-Harmon High School senior Gabrielle Stok, also known as “Gabby,” has been named a National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist. This prestigious recognition places her among approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide—representing the top 1% of U.S. high school seniors.

Gabby has been a student in the Croton-Harmon School District since first grade. Her many passions include research and medicine, learning languages, helping others, and supporting her peers and teammates. She is an active member of the varsity soccer, ski, and track and field teams, and participates in the French Club, JCK Legends Club, and Book Club. Gabby is currently working toward earning the New York State Seal of Biliteracy in French. Her leadership is evident in her service on the Cortlandt Youth Town Council and her role as the community outreach representative for the American Exchange Project. When asked about her future, she shared, “I hope to do something notable for humanity.”

Gabby qualified for this recognition through her outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), taken by more than 1.3 million juniors in over 20,000 U.S. high schools. The nationwide pool of semifinalists includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Since 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®) has recognized the nation’s top scholars and encouraged the pursuit of academic excellence through the annual National Merit Scholarship Program, now in its 71st year.

“We are extremely proud of Gabby and this remarkable achievement,” said CHHS Principal Dr. Laura Dubak. “She has consistently demonstrated a passion for learning, strong leadership, and a commitment to community service—a true embodiment of What School Can Be.”

Semifinalists now have the opportunity to apply to become finalists by submitting a detailed scholarship application, which includes their academic record, participation in school and community activities, leadership, honors and awards, and an essay. About 95 percent of semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and roughly half of those finalists will receive scholarships sponsored by NMSC®, corporations, or colleges and universities.

Winners of the 2026 National Merit Scholarships will be announced in four nationwide releases beginning in April and concluding in July.

Gabby’s success reflects the district’s dedication to fostering a learning community where students demonstrate enduring curiosity, engage in the pursuit of inspiration, and develop the habits of mind to promote personal growth and the well-being of society.
