Learning Comes to Light - Students Explore the Electromagnetic Spectrum

Students recently had the opportunity to see science concepts come to life through an engaging and interactive Lasermania performance held in the CHHS Auditorium.

As part of their current science unit, students have been studying waves and the electromagnetic spectrum. In class, they learned about the anatomy of a wave and explored the differences between mechanical and electromagnetic waves. Students also strengthened connections between science and mathematics by solving review problems involving lasers and the electromagnetic spectrum while researching related scientific concepts.

To extend their classroom learning, students attended Lasermania, a live science-based laser show featuring demonstrations that highlighted the properties of light and the electromagnetic spectrum. During the presentation, students observed how the three primary laser colors—red, blue, and green—combine to create white light. They also learned how different materials interact with light, discovering that white objects reflect light while black objects absorb it.

One memorable demonstration showed this concept in action when a black balloon absorbed the laser light directed at it and dramatically burst, drawing excitement and amazement from the audience.

Following the science demonstrations, students enjoyed a laser show synchronized to music. The performance sparked curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the auditorium, with many students responding with enthusiastic "oohs" and "ahhs" as they watched the colorful displays.

Experiences like Lasermania help students deepen their understanding of classroom concepts by connecting scientific theory to real-world applications in a fun and memorable way.
