Destination Imagination

DI Teams of Students 2021

CHUFSD Teams Excel in 2021 Destination Imagination Challenge

The Croton-Harmon Union Free School District is excited to announce that all four of the district’s Destination Imagination teams won big this year, with each team receiving an invitation to the Global Finals! This year’s teams—fifth-graders “Never Nachos”, PVC teams “We are Greg” and “dUH rHYmiNg gOhDz”, and the CHHS team “The Ghostbuster Finders”—all worked incredibly hard throughout the year to prepare for the challenge.

For those who aren’t familiar with Destination Imagination, it is an international educational program that operates in more than 30 countries and is sponsored by some of the world’s biggest tech companies. Participants are given project-based challenges meant to help them develop creativity and critical thinking skills as well as teamwork and communication. This year, Destination Imagination had to be held virtually due to the global pandemic, but this hasn’t slowed participants down one bit. CHUFSD teams practiced instant challenges via Zoom during Destination Imagination club meetings, while individual teams also met outside of school to prepare.

“We are incredibly proud of the students who have participated in Destination Imagination and impressed by their creativity,” said PVC Principal Michael Plotkin. “The DI experience aligns with the district's Profile of a Graduate and promotes the acquisition of essential 21st Century skills, including a combination of digital and technical acumen.

“These students spent over 100 hours and did all of this in their free time. We wish them all the best in the global finals,” he added.

The Destination Imagination challenge is separated into three age groups—elementary, middle and secondary—and there are also multiple categories to compete in within each age group. In Croton, “Never Nachos” came in first place in the elementary-level Technical Challenge, “We are Greg” finished second in the middle-level Engineering Challenge, “dUH rHYmiNG gOhDz,” placed first in the middle-level Technical Challenge, and “The Ghostbuster Finders” won the secondary-level Scientific Challenge. “dUH rHYmiNG gOhDz” also received a special ‘Renaissance Award’ for their unique challenge solution. (details about what their solution was/maybe a quote from them?)

All four of these teams have been invited to the Destination Imagination Global Finals, which will be held in July. All of us at CHUFSD will be cheering them on in the Finals, but regardless of how they perform there, we are extremely proud of the hard work and ingenuity that they have demonstrated so far.
